Preserving Heritage, Celebrating Legacy, Building Community

Who We Are

The Prairie View Trail Ride Association (PVTRA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Black Western Heritage, advancing agricultural education, and fostering a strong community through equine and rodeo traditions.

Recognized as the “Mother of Black Trails”, PVTRA has blazed the trail for countless riders and clubs, inspiring a lasting movement that continues to thrive.

Our Mission

  • Preserving Black Western Heritage and honoring the legacy of Black cowboys and Buffalo Soldiers.
  • Educating and empowering the next generation through partnerships with Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
  • Creating opportunities for youth and communities to engage in equine traditions, rodeo activities, and agricultural careers.
  • Fostering community and inclusivity through our annual trail ride, scholarship programs, and outreach initiatives.

Our History

Founded in 1957 by James Francies, Jr., PVTRA overcame racial barriers to become the first Black trail ride to participate in HLSR’s Downtown Parade in 1958.

Today, PVTRA is a leader in trail riding community and is recognized for its role in preserving culture, educating youth, and creating community impact.

Our commitment to tradition, leadership, and education continues to define who we are today.
